About this Journal
Most of what you will find on here is related to cards - Barbu and Bridge.

Which is better? Depends what you're looking for in a card game.

I think pound-for-pound on an average day - I have more fun playing Barbu... (sorry bridge folks...)

You will find stuff related to my family, my education, and Buffalo sports teams as well.

Oct. 13th, 2008 @ 09:40 am Bridge Update
Howdy Folks,

Just a quick note to mention a couple of things, not the least of which is my laziness in posting to the bridge blog I created.  Well, truth be told, I dont have the time that I had over the summer.  Life is getting more and more hectic by the second, it seems.  Anyway, I have played with the DoG in a couple of events in the last 4 weeks that I hope to blog about soon...

The first is the Instant Matchpoint Game from mid-september.  Played locally with the DoG, followed suit...life was good.  The second is the NAP qualifier from my district - 4 sessions of matchpoints (my least favorite event).  Followed suit as best as I could - was fighting a brutal case of 'die Scheiße' (dont speak german?  be thankful in this case).  Anyway, I dont want to suggest that I was suffering, but between the aforementioned problems, i had a mild cough and a cold to go with it - and oh yeah - sunday morning was going between sweating and shivering - not a great weekend for me physically.  Halfway through the last session, a woman gave me three pills to take - told me her husband was a doctor, and I would feel fine after taking them...

I trust people dont you?  Took em - 3 hours later I was ready to finally eat something...the drive home wasnt bad - didnt have to stop every 30 minutes...Anyway - will blog about these two events at some point in the very near future - while the NAP hands are fresh.  You all can get access to the Instant Matchpoint Hands...and results if you so choose - they're online someplace...

till next time.

About this Entry
Aug. 9th, 2008 @ 01:42 pm NAPs, BBO, and random thoughts...
Playing with the Big DoG in the NAPs - so we had to qualify a week ago.  we did - but not without trial and tribulation.  further, I want to post our system stuff so that you, the rabid readers, can make suggestions, modifications, and ask questions - if I am not clear - I will need to update that, obviously.

BBO - Have played on there more this week than in the last 6 months combined - some with QP, some with VJ, and some with JoKer.  The hands with JoKer were interesting - first because I was sitting in my backyard enjoying a fire - it was the 9pm matchpoint game.  There were an incredible set of hands - like hands designed for both matchpoints and teaching...proud to say we scratched, but left a LOT on the table....

some examples:  Please note:  I have not specified in which seat I am - these hands are not designed for you to figure out where JoKer and I were sitting - rather, to simply answer the questions....
This hand showed up with 2 boards to play - we were having a great game going into the last round - only 2 below average boards...(one was nearly a zero)...anyway, I picked up:
Q108
K10876
743
54

The auction, with JoKer and I silent, was:
1C - 1H
1S - 4N
5H! - 6N

5H was explained as showing two keys, no spade queen.  Your lead.

Earlier, this auction came up - you are North, West deals, and neither vul.
West.....North.....East.....South
1S...........P............2S.........2N
3S..........P...............P.........4D
(all pass)

What is going on?  What is your gut feeling?  What are the possibilities?  If it matters, south is not a slouch.  You probably want your hand, right?  Who cares - this is a theory question, but if you must know, you hold:

Q72
8652
1093
K92

So a)  what is going on? and b) do you agree with the ultimate pass by north, and c)  if not, what action do you take?

Another hand - you're not, they're hot.  The auction, with you as North:

West.....North.....East.....South
------.......-----.........P...........P
1C.........DBL........P..........2S
P...........??

Do you have enough to make a try here?
J1094

The answer lies within the nature of 2S.  Presumably this is - I have the best passed hand possible and spades - do something intelligent - or is it - i have something 8 HCP or better that is useful.  would 2C start all hands that are 'good' without regard to what suits South might have?  Or is 2C some sort of limit-raise-takeout with the unbid suits?

last but not least...a rock...

matchpoints, all hot.  East deals - this is one of those famous 'assign the blame' deals....

Assign blame (percentages if you wish) for missing slam.  How should the auction go?  What if the auction starts with 2S-P-4S-DBL - what now?

will post some hands from my NAP Q with the DoG soon....

Jul. 24th, 2008 @ 06:45 pm Final Vegas Blog...
Howdy Avid Rant Readers -
You are reading the last entry for this national.  I was going to blog tuesday and wednesday, but I am too upset to do so...i am thoroughly disappointed to be sure....

we crushed our opponents on tuesday, and were in a position to do the same on wednesday - but that did not happen.  anyway, I am not writing about anything from tuesday or wednesday with one exception - the moysian slam....

Sky and I (dont ask why, dont get me started) bid out to 6D on the following tickets...

AJ86..........Q5
A.................K72
Q1072.......A64
6542..........AKQJ3

North preempted with hearts.  South doubled 6D by west - I was declaring.  the rest of the auction will be left to your imagination... +1540 was good for 14 IMPs.  That doesn't include the 1400 we collected on another hand...and kicked the opponents ass despite multiple boards upon which poor judgment due to lack of experience flooded multiple IMPs to the opponents....in the final analysis, we lost by 12 IMPs.  I am sure a modicum of experience would have had no effect on the outcome of this match.

Perhaps next year.
About this Entry
Jul. 24th, 2008 @ 06:07 pm Vegas - Day 7 - Spingold Starts
Day 7 in Vegas – Monday  0-5000 Spingold
This is the other event that matters to me here.  I am going to be playing with QP – but apparently only half the time.  That sucks.  I did not know that I was half of a support person on this squad.  Not that it bothers me that much, but I prefer to have my judgment be a part of the equation for every hand, not just the even numbered quarters of each match – or so I assume.

Well anyway, we end up with the 43 seed in this event.  The seeding is a joke.  They take everyone’s factored masterpoints, and assign you a value based on that number.  Ridiculous.  Whatever, they claim they have to do it to make it ‘fair.’  Yeah, it’s so fair that the #1 seed fell in the round of 64.  Joke.  The defending champs are seeded 22.  Sure that’s fair.

Anyway, enough about my problems.  We are playing with Tom Breed and Li-Chung Chen.  I hope I spelled that correctly.  QP is gonna ‘kiss the sky’ for the odd numbered quarters, and I’ll enjoy the even numbered quarters – fine – as long as we win.  So I come in the second quarter on the day 1 qualifier.  There are 100 teams, and they have to get down to 64 – a power of 2 – to get to a decent place – so 36 teams get eliminated today.  We are in a three-way with the 29 seed and the 87 seed.  Well, we’re down 11 to the 29 seed and down 13 to the 87 seed when I enter the fray.

Lo and behold, who should sit down against me but an old nemesis from my fledgling days in Tucson.  LAD we’ll call him.  LAD once accused me of cheating when I pulled the wrong card out of my hand – I trumped instead of following suit – when I had 2 of the suit to follow – and his partner subsequently went down in claimer.  I think I had 7 masterpoints then.  OBVIOUSLY I knew I could get away with that because with 7 masterpoints, you need to cheat – and you know how to cheat, right?  Arse.

The second board out LADs partner overcalls 1NT.  I was having no part of that and cranked it up – +500 for the good guys and win 9.  Two hands later….
AQ7652
A
KQ43
A10

So I opened 1S.  QP bids 2H (wow!), and I bid 2S.  QP now bids 4D.  ZOIKS – this is good and bad news – the grand is out (we generally don’t splinter with stiff Aces), but we’re definitely bidding some slam.  So my rock and I bid 4NT.  QP fesses up to 2 key cards – so it was stiff Ace.  Lets see, 6 spades, 1 heart, 3 diamonds, 1 club.  Further, I know his pattern is 4513 (or better for me).  That means we have NO losers in any suit.  Not sure we have 13 winners on power in NoTrump.  7S I say.  2210 later, we pickup 13 IMPs.  My teammate, nijuku we’ll call him, preempted 3C as the dealer on my left, so it was hard to get there….

When the smoke clears, we pick up 10 IMPs, and at half-time we’re down 1 to this team – the 29 seed.

In the other match, we’re playing a couple of Asian dudes who, QP claims, may engage in various levels of nefarious activity.  I don’t know much.  But they bid everything in sight, and sadly, QP and I are handcuffed to do anything about it – we give up 6 more IMPs in this quarter – but an interesting success.  It is clear we’re losing more imps to this team going into the final board, and I picked up”
103
AK1097
A4
J1097

I opened 1H.  QP bid a semi-forcing NT.  I bid 2C, and QP bid 2NT.  The hell with it.  I bet he cant take exactly 8 tricks!  3NT I say!  His hand?

654
Q4
Q9873
AQ5

Can you take 9 tricks?  Hearts break.  The CK is offside.  The DK is ‘onside’ third.  The lead is the D5.  That goes to the King and a diamond back.  Guess what?  They are 3-3.  Claim it up.  Horrible defense.  And we needed the extra 10 IMPs.  So we give up 6 more imps to this team.

As we enter the dinner break, we’re down 1 IMP against the ‘high seed,’ and down 19 IMPs against the ‘low seed.’  I think (read: know) we can beat the high seed.  The low seed, not too sure – they play the cards very well, and bid like maniacs.  A lethal IMP combination.
Sky invites us all for dinner and we have a wonderful meal as a team.  I am dead broke.  Literally all I have in my pocket right now is my room key, 2 pennies, and 4 tokens for video games at the Sahara hotel….summer time is not easy when there is NO income.  That said, tt is fun to hang with these guys, and get to know Nijuku and Tomb.

One of these days, I am going to post ALL the nicknames that have been used on this blog and address the people in detail.  We’ll see if that helps you.

SO the third quarter comes up with a bit of a hitch.  We drop IMPs to the nemesis team and now trail them by 13.  We pickup 10 IMPs against the ‘low seed’ and now trail them by 9.  This blows.  This should not be happening.  On paper, we should be able to crush these two teams.  I don’t know Tomb and Nijuku from Shinola, but I know they finished in the overalls of the 3-day Life Master Pairs.

LAD comes over before the 4th quarter begins to inform me that he wants to hold my cards and see how they do.  I think that is an awesome idea.  I want to plant my foot so far into this guy’s colon that I have to reach into his mouth to untie my shoes.  Forgiven but not forgotten, I guess.

Second board out – we pick up 10 IMPs on what should have been a routine hand.  QP passes.  RHO opens 1D.  I bid 1S.  Lefty passes, and QP bids 1NT.  I raise to 3NT.  He is used to this because I always have extras for my overcalls…my hand:
AKQ98
Q
KJ4
A982

QP knows this is a possible hand type for 19 highs, sure, but an obvious flaw, and if QP cant raise, are we going to make a game?  I think not.  No Harm is overcalling alone.  The contract is the same, but the result is different – somehow Nijuku and Tomb beat it….oh well…
2 boards later – the auction, you are South and the dealer.

W     N     E     S
--……--……--……P
1D…2S…..X……P
3C…P…….3S…..P
3NT…P…..P…..DBL
(all pass)

I was speculating a bit.  Have you discussed a sequence similar to this with your favorite partner?  You should if you have not.  What is dbl here?  They have bid all the suits except spades.  You had 2 chances to ‘raise’ spades (re-double of the double, and double of 3S) but chose not to.  Ergo, a spade is out.  You don’t have a suit of your own that partner is aware of, so this is a Lightner-esque double.  What was dummy’s first bid suit?  Hearts!

Your hand:
103
AQ1095
1094
J85

Sure you have no defense if they can rack up 9 winners…but without a heart lead, you probably stand no chance.  As it turns out, declarer has only 8 tricks without a heart lead, but with a heart lead – declarer has 6 tricks.  You collect 500 and another 10 IMPs for your effort.  Later on, you smack them in a partial and collect 100 for win 5.  You win this set 26-0 and send LAD back to his hotel room sucking his thumb.  He did NOT crack 3NT – although he did pause for thought for a very long time over both the 3H bid and the subsequent 3NT call.  Nice.  Who’s cheating?

Enter the 87 seed.  You’re down 9 to them – barely an IMP a board.  But they are a good team so it probably wont be easy.  Second board out…it goes 1D-Pass-1S to you, holding:
32
AKJ93
52
A1065
SO the auction begins with 1D on your left.  RHO bids 1S.  You bid 2H.  You are one trick light for this overcall – QP has grown accustomed to me have the same hand but with AJ10 of clubs or something similar that would produce an extra trick.  I don’t have it – but when LHO bids 2S, QP bids 3S – yee haw.  So I bid a game – obviously – knowing that I am probably a trick light.  QP has a scattered 10 count and makes a comment about having a slam try – and he does, opposite a more normal overcall for me.  Win 7 for +450 when they only get to a part score at the other table….

We’re now down 2 imps to this team with 5 boards to go…and then….
AKQJ97

I am a conservative bidder, but this looks like a 2C opener to me….the opps are silent:
P – 2C
2D! – 2S
3C – 5H!!
5NT!!! – 7C
! = something
!! = exclusion blackwood for clubs
!!! = 1 key card, no trump queen
This was laydown, QP held:
43
9872
J3
K10983

25 HCP grand slams do not suck.  Win 14.  My counterpart opened all of 1S.  and his RHO, my teammate, balanced.  They managed to get to game.

We picked up 13 IMPs a bit later when our opps did not bid a slam, but our teammates did.  Then, a bit of a play problem…

The spots are 100% accurate.  This looks like a ‘Bridge-Master’ hand.  In Bridge Master, the spots are 100% relevant – and all spot cards are givens as 2’s or 3’s unless they matter.  So I got a heart lead…can you find 9 tricks?  Me neither.  I found 10.  Win 11.  The HK is not onside…
So we beat this team 46-3 this set.  We win both matches!  We now assume the 29 seed because they lost – so long LAD.  Go back to Tucson and accuse others of cheating, cheater.  And life goes on…Day 2 of the spingold tomorrow.  We draw the 36 seed – they are higher than our original seed, but perhaps the seeding is really as meaningless as it appears….in any event, I assume I will only play the 2nd and 4th quarter tomorrow as well…

Will let you know more about that then…..

About this Entry
Jul. 24th, 2008 @ 06:06 pm Vegas - Day 6
SUNDAY – Vegas day 6.
I am banished to the 4th ring of hell for the first session Sunday – that is to say I have to sit out the first half.  Oh well.  Such is the pleasure of playing five or six handed.  Sometimes I want the break – sometimes I need the break – and usually I just want to play…this is one of those times.  I miss Lori.  I miss the kids.  As luck would have it, our team annihilates the opposition in the first half – so badly in fact that our opponents are completely demoralized and w/d from the event.  As such, I get the ENTIRE afternoon off!  YAY!  But I have to find something to do now…not easy….but I end up goofing off with some friends, helping QP checkout of his hotel, and enjoying a $0.99 hot dog which is unbelievably HUGE!  0.5lbs – footlong.  Yikes.

On to the finals – we draw the team we expected to draw – well, the team that I expected we’d draw.  If you were here, you’d ‘know’ why I expected to draw them.  If you weren’t, I am not going to tell you…but I predicted we would draw this team last night when I saw the final eight teams in the event…I don’t know ‘Y’ I think that way sometimes, but it’s amazing how often that happens.
SO the team decides that Lou and I should anchor the evening – no problem…here we go!

I have to confess – my notes are crappy about this set.  We lose the first half by a million, and someone’s true colors come through – there is a suggestion to withdraw.  Get serious – we can beat any team in this event, especially this one – but we don’t – we end up losing, and life goes on….

It’s not a big deal, really – I have lost KOs before….

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 12:59 pm Vegas Report - Day 5 Weekend KOs
Las Vegas - Day 5
So I wake up early today, we pack up our crap, and we checkout of the Sahara.  Lori wants to hang out, and perhaps do a little shopping before leaving for Buffalo.  This sucks royally – that she is leaving.  It was fun, nay, great having her here – but it ended so abruptly…
So as I mentioned yesterday, the team wants to play KOs this weekend.  I estimate we’ll be in bracket 2 or bracket 3 based on my Gatlinburg experience.  Well, I was wrong.  Because the spingold starts Monday, a lot of pairs are brushing up on their agreements, etc, on the weekend – and we end up the bottom of bracket 5 (of 19).  So I get Lori to the airport, haul ‘ace’ back to the playing site, and find my teammates – nearly a needle in a haystack – 276 teams in room – not to mention the compacts, the swiss, the side pairs games, etc…WOW!  There are a LOT of folks here…

So I finally see the team – and have a seat.  Lo and behold, Lou is sitting there.  I think Lou is new to the blog…not sure.  I know I have discussed hands that I have played against him, but have not played with him in so long that there is not an extensive materials list for the blog.  So anyway, we review some stuff real quick, and sit down to do battle…

The state of the match?  We’re already ahead by 30 IMPs at the halfway point.  Our teammates inform us that the opponents don’t seem to have a grasp as to what is going on – fundamentally speaking – they just don’t have it.  I have to disagree ever so slightly – the pair Lou and I play against aren’t tragic.

2nd board out of the box, I see what they meant…Their bidding sequence was from science fiction…
N – S
1N – 2C (DBL)
3H – 4H
4N – 5C
5H – all pass.
The No-Trumper asked for key cards.  I cranked the stayman inquiry, and Lou duly led a club – I quickly cashed the CA and DA – dummy had stiff king of diamonds.  Declarer then finessed into my king of trumps – stiff no less.  That was 11 quick IMPs.

A few hands later, I have a WWJD problem.  I picked up:
KJ104
852
54
Q1052
All HOT – Lou opens 3S as dealer.  I have a great preemptive hand – but guess what?  My RHO bids 6H.  What is your call?  I reasoned something like this – it is likely that 7H is making – and it is likely that if I push this pair, they will bid it.  So if I pass, they might not bid it.  If they do bid it, I will save.  SO I passed….7H on my left…pass pass….7S.  Double.  1700!  Yikes – but the cool thing is they are cold for 7H – so this is a possible pickup – lose 6.  Not only did our teammates not bid the grand, the opps didn’t save – the auction was the same through 6H (i.e., two bids long).

So we pile on another 34 IMPs to win by a bundle….on to round 2.  In the meantime, the D-5 GNT-B squad from Buffalo (Hammer, Lumbar, JaG, Naid) is in the round of four – and leading by 28 at halftime!  So we go eat together at the Peppermill…some great stories from both Lou and me as well as from their GNT match.

My notes from the second match suck – but there is one hand where you have an opening lead decision….
You hold:
J72
K1086
KQ
7653
The auction starts on your right with 1NT.  LHO bids 2C, RHO bids 2H.  LHO bids 3NT.  You’re up.  This is an easy question…Rate the suits in order that you would lead them – without regard to what card you choose…What would you lead?  The S2?  Then you rank spades first.  If you lead the C6, then rank clubs first.  Whatever, but you pick.

We’re down 17 at the half of this match.  We ended up winning by nearly 30.  So on to the semi finals…this team was not half bad, but they were overpowered.

That will end the day 5 report here.  I did not take nearly as many notes this time because of the event, and the newly reinstated partnership….we’ll build our way into the B.I.G./Lou discussions later…

So here’s to the semi finals….lets go Buffalo!  Incidentally, while Lori and I were wandering the Vegas streets today, we bumped into the nicest couple on the planet – June and Jim Linhart.  Jim and I became acquainted a number of years ago at the Bermuda Regional thanks to “Bermuda” (see previous blog entries).  He has always thought kindly of me because of my treatment of Bermuda both at and away from the table.  He told me he wanted to help out because he knew I had no place to stay Saturday evening – and so, on the spot, he gave me the key to his time share – and told me to take the ‘room on the right.’  It was awesome – the gesture, the room, and the man.

I look forward to returning this favor to someone some day.  I am a lucky guy when it comes to stuff like this – things just work out.  Jim then informs me that I am welcome to stay at his ‘other’ time share on the strip starting tomorrow.  He says there are ONLY 4 bathrooms and 2 kitchens in the four bedroom suite.  I am at that time share as I write this blog entry - My bathroom here, which is just mine, is approximately the size of my kitchen – perhaps a bit smaller…the shower is the size of my entire bathroom at home…zoiks.

I am worth every penny – yeah, right.  I only wish I was worth half of that much….

About this Entry
Jul. 22nd, 2008 @ 02:00 pm GNT-A Round of 8...
Day 4 in Vegas – Day 3 of the GNT-A
Welcome to Friday morning.  I am feeling GREAT today.  Lori and I hung out at the pool, worked on some crossword puzzles, etc.  I got to blog a bit this morning, even though you haven’t read about it yet.  I am bummed because I know the end of her vacation is near – and we really have not spent that much time together.  She says she understands about my anchoring the team – and I believe her – but that does not mean it doesn’t suck for her.  Her poker face is SOLID – which to me means it’s not actually a poker face, but legitimate feelings of ‘it is okay.’  I hope that is true.

So I arrive at the playing site in plenty of time to see that we drew the defending champions – well, 2/3 of the team is the same as last year.  No big deal.  I know two of the players on the team – and while they are solid, they have an abundance of chinks in the armor – as most teams do no matter what level.  Pizza takes me aside to ask me an interesting question…”Do you not like playing with me,” he says.  Apparently I gave off too much of an ‘I don’t give a shit’ vibe last night.  As anyone I play with can attest to, I don’t care with whom I play, Nor do I really care very much who my teammates are.  I want to win as much as anyone else, but my point is, unless I play perfectly, I just don’t care about the others on my team from a bridge standpoint.  I am far more concerned with their emotional health.  If you have played with my long enough you know this is true.  Pizza and I do not have a long history together (fewer than 50 boards together) and he does not have a feel for my demeanor at the table.  He interprets ‘lack of frivolity’ to indicate lack of happiness.  Not so.  I just don’t care about anything other than bridge while we’re at the table.  And maybe I don’t like getting lessons in between sessions, or any other time, for that matter.

Remember that discussion about certain members of our team and the East Jahunga team?  I would be uptight if that safety wanted to give lessons to the rest of the team.  It’s just puffing your chest when you don’t need to.  I know my value to the team, and I know everyone else’s value to the team – relative both to who’s good and who isn’t, who’s hot and who isn’t, etc.  I don’t need anyone to treat anyone else like shit because they want to prove something about their resume´.  If this is arrogant, then give me the scarlet letter right now – Sorry if you don’t think I am a good enough judge of bridge ability, character, and integrity.

So I sit with Jam (positions not revealed until you answer the following question), and at the other table, Spiral partners Pizza while Shooter gets some rest (or wins another thousand at the ‘21’ tables…)  First, take a look at this entire hand and tell me where the problem is:

North leads a fourth-best heart.  Declarer wins the queen at T1.  At trick 2, declarer plays the Diamond Ace and gets the bad news as North plays the S8 – N/S play odd-even first discards.  He continues a diamond.  South wins as cheaply as necessary and plays back the H4 to the ace – west playing the 10 and North the 2.  Declarer plays the D10 from dummy and south wins the Jack as north produces the 6 of spades….

Can you see the problem?  South now has to play a spade to beat the contract, but has potentially conflicting information.  Is it possible for west to have the QJ10 of hearts as the original holding?  If that is the case, the third heart is required.  Is it possible for north’s hearts to suck and a spade play be required?  If you did not have the advantage of seeing all four hands, you would have a much harder time coming to a conclusion – So, using the information of the BIDDING and PLAY only – what do you do when you’re in with the DJ?

South, in the example played back another heart.  That was not a resounding success.  I have my theory as to what was right and why – but do you?  As is common with bridge-world type problems, assign the blame – All North?  All South?  50-50 or some other percentage?  Or is TGD just being himself?

Then, Jam played a hand really nicely for an 11 imp pickup – and it seemed clear to me two things:  A)  it was definitely the right play, and B) his counterpart was not likely to find it.  Just a feeling – and it was right.  You are west playing 3NT.  What do you do?

The opening lead was  a spade to the Jack and the queen.  Now what?  At one point in the hand, Jam played a club to the 9.  If I did not have the 9, ducking from both hands would be correct with the intention of finessing the queen the 2nd time around – King third onside will fetch.  As it was, the 9 fetched the King!  They were 3-3, and he quickly chalked up 11 tricks with HK in the pocket.  Nice play, Jam.

The rest of the hands were fairly dull with those two exceptions, but when Jam asks ‘how do you think it is?’ I reply that It’s not great, but that I would rather have our card than theirs…

And the numbers bear that out – at the ¼ mark, we are ahead 27-24.  It feels like I thought it would – close, but we’re ahead.

On to the second quarter.  I order deep dish with all the toppings for this set of 14 while Jam takes a breather.  On the first board, I blow a meaningless overtrick IMP.  On the second board, some creative bidding by an opponent who was sitting out the first half, and doesn’t know about my Kung-Fu style…(yeah, right).  My hand was:

QJ9762

Pizza dealt and opened 1C.  My RHO bid 1S.  I bid 2H (yes, thanks, I know it’s a little light).  LHO bid 2S, and Pizza bid 3S.  This got cracked.  We don’t have many agreements, but it seems to me if he wants to know about NT, he’ll tell me if I pass.  So I do that.  Pizza’s 4H should end the bidding, but we’re red, and they’re white.  So, my RHO decides to play Jesus and bids 4S.  Bad idea.  Soon it is 8 spades (4 spades doubled) and we collect everything – including 2 trump tricks (I got a promotion), 2 hearts when the King was onside doubleton.  2 diamonds, and 2 clubs.  We tapped out declarer before he could establish his diamonds.  A cool 1100.  More importantly, and early message not to try his club game tactics in a national…but I could be wrong.  That was win 9 IMPs  - that represented our biggest pickup of the half.
At the half, the opponent who went for his nuts was quick to point out that 6H was icecold and ‘why didn’t his team bid it’ etc.  WTF are you talking about?  We’re off 2 key cards, and hearts need to cooperate.  Even if you KNEW the HK was onside, it is still a less than even percentage because of the 3-1 splits….

There was not much to do this quarter – we lose some ground, but nothing to write home about….We lost that segment 29-23, so we’re now down 3 IMPs for the day.  Big deal…we can do that easily.  But giving up IMPs doesn’t feel good – we should just be rocking this team.
TD and Shooter got a little excited on a hand in that quarter and went off 1 in slam for lose 11.  I wont mention names, but the free-safety decided revoking was a good idea….and blew 5 imps in the process…whatever, it’s aggravating, but again, when I play perfectly is the day I will start saying anything to my teammates.  To that end, Spiral and I have had some AWESOME discussions about methodology and approaches.  Further, we were recently approached by the BIG-DoG (from now on, referred to as BD) to try to put a team together for future GNTs – that sounds intriguing if not realistic….time will tell….but I think Spiral and I will give it a go in the VERY near future…Neither of us have time for anything – enter BBO.  Thanks, Fred G.

Off to dinner – it was delicious – WOW – it was AMAZING.  It was the Hofbrau Haus in Las Vegas.  Lori really wanted to enjoy a nice meal while we together – so I told her to figure out a place she wanted to go eat, and when the session ended, we would go there.  Well let me tell you – she picked an ENORMOUS winner.  It was amazing – the atmosphere, the people, the service was exemplary – and the food?  It was like I imagined my dad’s parents (off the boat from what used to be East Germany) ate every day.  It was just like I remember the Hofbrau Haus in Munchen when I was there 20 years ago!

Lori had the Sauerbraten and I had some of the best Marjoram-veal brats I have ever had.  We started with Kartoffel Puffer (potato pancakes).  Washed that down with a liter of fine German Ale – and then the main dishes – they were great.

Geschmäcke sehr gut!

So moving into the evening session, Spiral is gonna sitout – and Pizza will sit out the fourth quarter.  I had asked the team that if it was a blowout in either direction if I could have the 4th Q off so that I could enjoy some Lori time – but thru the half, there was no blowout – in fact, down 3 is still a great match.  So off we go.  It was interesting – just before this half began, I complained slightly to Spiral that we were bucking fate by continuing to play Pizza-Me as a partnership – that there were no accidents yet, but one was bound to occur due to our lack of discussions of methodology, etc – we have never really discussed our card believe it or not.  Third board out of the box, a little bit of lightning struck…I held:

The auction started with 1D on my right.  1S on my left.  Pizza throws 1NT on the table.  RHO asks…and my response is “I could tell you but I would just be guessing”  Is this takeout?  Is it strong?  I have 5-4 in the roundeds, so that would tend to indicate a strong NT.  There was no spade raise on my right – is it a strong NT?  I have 7 HCP so perhaps it is a weaker takeout.  I don’t know.  Let’s suppose it is a strong NT – are transfers on here?  And if so, would a transfer to spades make sense?  If it is a light takeout, I want to play 2/3/4H.  if it is a strong NT, I most likely want to play 2/3/4H.  But I don’t know our methods.  So I decide that a spade transfer seems stupid – so I bid 2H.  TRANSFER! He says.  And life sucks.  Now – when he bids 2S – and there is a TON of UI available… but does that mean I must bid again?  I ‘know’ because of the announcement which I am not allowed to hear, that he now has a 1NT opener.  If he had a light t/o, 2S would be an impossible bid – ergo he cannot have a light takeout…. So if that is the case, and I wanted to play 2H – 2Spades must be a cuebid for hearts, right?  So I must bid 4H, right?  A max, a fit, blah blah blah….

I don’t know what the right answer is.  I think in front of a committee I am forced to bid 4H and go down like a man – the result would have been the same as the table result -200.  But guess what?  When dummy hits, I have to deal with the huffing and hawing and a “this is insane” comment.

(expletives deleted from original post)

A  couple of hands later, we bid a slam.  It required a non-club lead to make it – but since clubs was doubled at my table, they got their lead, and their 17 IMPs.  At the other table, they just blasted into a slam without such trivialities as controls and got rewarded.  It happens….

You bid, with silent opponents:
1C – 1H;

Is it right to invite?  Does the vulnerability matter to you?  If you’re concerned about IMP-odds, I’ll tell you that you’re vulnerable and they are not….does that influence your decision sufficiently?

Then – an SOS redouble – uhoh.  So, I decide to open a real gem:

Do you agree with the bidding?  You’re at equal white, obviously playing IMPs.  General plan on a small diamond lead to the ten?
This was an 8 IMP pickup when our teammates were down one in some number of diamonds…
So we compare the third quarter, and guess what?  We pick up  - although very little.  It is 39-37 in our favor – yes, that’s 76 IMPs in fourteen boards – and there was a push.  So how did you do in that last 4S contract?  I bet it was not what you thought…but when west shows out of trumps, the hand becomes a bit clearer….

If you are keeping track of this match, we are presently stuck 1 IMP with 14 boards to play.  It is presently anyone’s match.  With a bit of flair and arrogance, I have to say – I cannot friggin believe we are losing this match – and I mean that – WE are losing – we’re not being beaten.  We’re just pissing away IMPs…so lets hope that doesn’t happen with 14 to play…0ff we go.  I have missed a total of 14 boards in three days – you better believe I am not missing this next set of 14…not a rat’s chance in hell…

And we’re off…..
First board – push
Second board – lose one overtrick IMP when I get aggressive in trying to beat their game.
Third board – There is an opportunity for them to pick up here as they do NOT play 1NT forcing.  It is the last making spot – and my opponents make 2 when we slip slightly in the defense…it is a moot point, IMPs wise, and we lose 8
So we’re now down 10 with 11 to go…

Fourth board – push
Fifth board – push
Sixth board….this was tremendous fun to defend.  Jam ends up missing a chance to endplay dummy for down 2 and we collect 100 – these IMPs would turn out to cost us in the big picture…but, we still collect 4 IMPs as our teammates went plus also.  So far so good…
Seventh board – This sucks.  I open 1NT, Jam transfer to 2H and we’re done.  My trump suit is:  98762 opposite Q5.  I need as many tricks as I can.  I play a trump to the queen and it goes king.  Later on when I play a trump, the hand who won the King shows out.  Yugh.  4 natural trump losers.  Life sucks.  I try to recover and go down an extra trick in the process…-200 instead of -100 which could have been +110 if things went my way (double hook in a side suit).  Anyway, on that hand, same contract at the other table, their declarer only had 3 natural trump losers.  Person ‘A’, whose name shall not be used to protect the innocent flew Ace the first time trumps were played squashing their partner’s stiff King…damn.  That is -110 for them, and lose 7 IMPs for us…it was always five IMPs – but if I play for down 1 instead, we’d be in better shape.

Halfway through this quarter, and we are currently down 13 IMPs.  7 to go.  The next three boards seem routine, and so it proves – one push, lose 1 imp, gain 1 imp on silly overtricks…4 to play, and still stuck 13.  Then, what looks like the nail in the coffin…you declare five diamonds on the following hand as west…

AJ….…………10984
J5….………….Q
AKQ9852…J107
Q9……………A8742

You opened 1D as west, North bid 4H and you bid out to 5 diamonds on the way back which was passed out.  Can you make it?  They led the HA, and switched to a trump.  Jam won the Ace in his hand….and did what?  That seems like an odd play to me – you need to pitch a club from your hand to make this puppy – or you need to setup clubs for a spade discard.  It looks to me like spades will provide your best opportunity for another trick.  So if you win the trump in dummy and lead a spade – you put yourself in a good position to catch either both spades onside, a spade honor onside-third, or a simple ruffing finesse later.  Well, SA followed by SJ – and north follows low smoothly as south win the spade king and backs a small club.  Jam puts up the queen, and darnit all, it goes king. He wins the ace and …..plays the 10 of spades – small from south….and he ruffed it.  This has to be anti percentage both a priori and otherwise…

Good news?  It’s a push.  Bad news?  It’s an 11-imp loss for our side, essentially, since his counterpart went down as well…so we have 3 boards to play, and we’re stuck 13.

Board 11 – we bully the opponents to a no-play game and collect 100 – I think Spiral and Shooter will bid accurately to the cold 3NT - …I had a great opportunity to trick the declarer holding JT8 of trumps…The combined holding in trumps was:

AQ94 opposite K76.  Declarer played the queen, and I played the 8.  On Small to the King, I played the jack.  Declarer hooked on the way back.  I would have also – I preempted during the bidding and didn’t lead my ‘shortness’ – so I probably have short trumps…BZZZZZZT….
So we’re stuck 2 imps with 2 boards to play.  (note now that going down 1 in 2H would be essential at this point…or perhaps beating 1NT two tricks for win 6 instead of win 4….if Jam and I are perfect – that is to say neither of these two things happen AND we make 5D, we are ahead with two to play…)

On the 2nd to last board, the opponents make a slam try, and come up short at the 5 level.  Six is laydown cold, and from what I can see in the dummy, it’s infinitely biddable – in fact – it is easier with fewer methods – enter Spiral and Shooter – remember Shooter doesn’t play a lot of crap – but uses judgment instead.  Well, alas, judgement failed to get us there too…so that was a push…
One to play!  We’re stuck 2 IMPs….2 friggin IMPs.  The opponents have 31 HCP and fail to even make an effort to bid a slam.  The boys bid the slam – and it comes down to a key suit – trumps…you have:  AJT7 opposite Q982.  You need the King in the hole – and it….IT….IT…..is offside…lose 11.

Final result – lose by 13 IMPs.  Now – check it out.  If Jam and I are picture perfect, we pick up 11 IMPs in 5D, and 2 IMPs each defending 1NT and declaring 2H.  we win by 2.  So I cannot comfortably say that “we did our best.”  We simply didn’t.  Our best was easily good enough to beat this team…

What is sad, and I can tell you this now, is on paper, I didn’t think we had a great team.  We had some good individuals, but I really did not care for our chemistry.  We actually got further than I thought we would – I told Lori there was a chance we would not make day 2 of the KO phase…we did.  In that regard, my ‘team’ proved me wrong…In other regards, my team proved me dead on accurate….chemistry, as I had mentioned from Meadville, was a problem.  I can say this for sure, and it is with some sadness – I wont play for a national championship on this specific team again.

Jam was a totally different character this time around - way more supportive and responsive than in meadville to the needs of the team.  I do NOT care how badly we lose ever – and I do NOT care how much we crush our opponents…I care about people being treated equitably…especially me.

This is not a knock on Jam, but rather on Pizza - I don’t need a steel girder for support from my partner, but I do need something resembling a wet noodle to support the decisions across the table.  To Jam:  Thanks bro – your approach to the game in Las Vegas was WAY better than your approach to Meadville.  Your discipline was much appreciated – not once did he open 1NT with a stiff!  In fact, at one point, we both had a good laugh about that during one of the hands on Friday.  Your competitive spirit and willingness to want to kick one particular opponent’s ass (think red shirt) was refreshing going into the last quarter….you played admirably.  Pizza – bro – gotta lighten up on your partner and your teammates…It’s just slightly, EVERY SO SLIGHTLY possible that:

a)    your CHO knows when he/she f**cked up, and
b)    your teammates know the same….
c)    your teammates want to win as much as you do
d)    your partner/teammates can outplay you…

Shooter, Spiral – thanks for the fun and the camaraderie.  Thanks for covering entry fees, Bubba – made my financial life a lot easier.  Spiral, thanks for giving me every single problem for review after each round – it made the hands a lot clearer, not only for the blog, but for the sake of our future partnership….

Day 4 in Vegas is over, and so is our GNT foray.  Lori is flying home tomorrow at 4pm.  The team wants to play Sat-Sun KOs – I do too, but I need to sitout the first half.   We will get into those gory details later.

AMF!
About this Entry
Jul. 22nd, 2008 @ 03:52 am GNT-A, Day 2 - Round of 16
Day 3 in Vegas – Day 2 of the GNT-A.  We are the #1 seed to start today.  I am the first to admit that even on paper this should not be the case….sometimes Goliath loses to a group of David’s.  I have been asked by my teammates to anchor.  I think this is a splendid idea with a couple of caveats – the first being who sits out when.  Stamina, as previously mentioned may be a factor, and I want to make sure that we have our power lineup available if we need it….

One of the problems with this team, I think, is the questioning of the abilities of particular members of the team – and even people who are not members of the team.  Look, the worthless piece of crap free-safety for the East Juhunga Bears football team still has a job to do….and still wants to feel wanted and be an integral part of the team.  One of the things I think we lost out on was this feeling – I think there is (was) a little bit of infighting with who is and who is not playing.  Perhaps this is a misperception on my part, but I don’t think so.  Here is the other thing which I know is true:  If it IS accurate, my teammates will never admit to it – I’ll get some story from them…and I know this because I have already received multiple versions of the same event from people…life goes on.

Another issue we might have?  We have non-practiced (aka non-polished) partnerships.  This may cause us grief later, but didn’t hurt too much in the Swiss yesterday.  Here’s hoping.

I don’t have a full update on our district because I did not stick around to see how our championship flight team performed.  At least we represented our district well enough – everyone qualified for the round of 16.  I know our flights A, B, and C teams advanced to play today.  In flight B, I believe we are the 7 seed.  In flight C, I believe we are 15 or 16.  Warning:  the next sentence contains the results of the day 2 matches for flights B and C.  If you are waiting to hear the news from a friend or member of that team, DO NOT READ THE NEXT SENTENCE.  Our flight B squad was down 16 after the first quarter.  Going into the 4th quarter, they had a 19 IMP lead!  I believe they won by 24 IMPs….so they are in tomorrow.  Our flight C team, if you recall, barely qualified…because of that, the #1 seed picked them…BIG MISTAKE.  Minh and the boys racked up MASSIVE IMPs and crushed that squad to a fine pulp.  So, we have at least 2 teams in the round of 8 from our district.  WAY TO GO!

So we sit down against the 16 seed and the first words out of their collective mouths were something to the effect of…”so you picked us, huh?”  Of course, not being one to throw my teammates under the bus, I snapped back with a quick “I was at the Paris with my wife gambling – I had nothing to do with it…”  The female member of this partnership (quite simply the NICEST lady in the event) smiled and complimented me on my choice of hanging with Lori and not playing cards.  I could not agree more.  So off we go…

Incidentally, I am writing this Saturday evening – so I already know the results of whatever event(s) we happen to be playing in for today and tomorrow…my apologies for the tardiness…and for the tone of the blog as I may seem either too chipper or too upset…my fault
Third board out of the box, there is some action – although I am not in on it until much later in the hand.  I picked up:
KQJ2
Q754

Not an awful collection, and with a fit and a limit raise, we might make something out of this hand, eh?  So, even better, Jam opens a strong NT (please don’t have a stiff!!).  My RHO bids 2H showing hearts and a minor.  Well, I intend to use slow-shows lebensohl, right?  I’ll cuebid 3H slowly suggesting both four spades and a heart stopper.  Seems like a plan….even a bad plan is still a plan, right!?

So, I bid 2NT.  My LHO passes – and the strangest thing happens…CHO trots out 3D.  WTF is going on here?  My guess is this – he has a six bagger in diamonds and is not willing to play in clubs (remember – he does NOT know why I am bidding lebensohl – and he also knows that his LHO has clubs – something which I may not know… but this is just a guess.  So…I follow through with the plan.  I bid 3H which he alerts.  He now bids 3S.  Looks good to me – a little wastage in hearts, but so what – I raise to 4S.  It goes all pass…  Jam’s shape?  Well, at least there was no stiff.  3262.  Anyway, we end up playing the moysian, which worked out well for us, but 3NT was cold.

What I don’t understand is, why not just accept the 3C transfer?  It would keep the opponents in the dark as to his actual hand….and if I happen to pass 3C, so what.  What was interesting is the fact that he had half-a-heart-stopper and 1.5 club stoppers…on the lie of the cards, the opening lead of a club or a heart blows a trick for the defense.  I don’t know what to say – and while the ultimate result of the board was win 4 imps, the mental gymnastics that become required for this stuff takes a toll if you let it.  I hope that Jam takes it easy on Shooter in this regard – but then again, it is my understanding that shooter does not play too many conventions and things…
There was not a whole lot of action until the 9th board – I held:

J73
Q93
A10974
J6

The auction started with Jam opening 1S, and my RHO bidding 2S.  Do you have agreements in place?  The only obvious thing that we play here is that 3H becomes a limit raise or better.  So, next question, do you bid a game holding:

K8642
K
KJ865
A5

A six loser hand opposite a simple raise.  This is both vul, and it is IMPs.  What do you think about a shot at ten tricks (remember, this is still the auction phase, and you don’t have the luxury of knowing that partner has a solid simple raise?

Well, that ends the apparent excitement of the first quarter – time to compare, and while I don’t think we have a great card, I would rather have our card than theirs…a quick comparison shows that we are ahead 38-29.  A 9 IMP advantage – not much – but it’s a lead, and I don’t think we’ll relinquish it.  These opponents are very nice people – infer what you should.

In the second quarter, Jam decides to sitout, which puts us at a strategic disadvantage from a partnership perspective.  I don’t have extensive notes with Jam, but I do know that our agreements have been discussed in greater detail than my notes with Pizza.  Further, I have a better feel for the partner Jam is in terms of tendencies.  It is easy to accommodate for partners when you know their style of bidding and play.  Not that it is or has been a problem, but it might be.

Second board out of the box – I pickup this collection in second chair:
A104  K872  8752  32
The auction, with me sitting west, is:
W     N     E      S
--      --      --      P
P     1N    2C!   2D
P     3C    3H    4C

Now what?  So I have a ruffing value, they obviously own diamonds, but only 3 controls.  However,  he did hit my suit.  He did bid it freely at the 3 level.  He probably has a card or two in spades.  So I bid a game.  I think the pros outweigh the cons – I definitely have more than I am expected to have on this auction – and no wasted cards in the minors too…well, LHO is having no part of this and bids 5C (by now, LHO’s bidding is pretty incredible, no?)  So we spank that for +300 and win 10 imps.  Very odd…

Then, a hand that I bid poorly…and a story about bidding poorly….

AQ82
AKQJ7
9
KJ3

So I open 1H as the dealer (I know, I know…not bad yet).  Pizza replies 1NT.  What is your call to this forcing bid?  The opps pass throughout.  I chose 3NT.  Can I envision a slam opposite AQxxxx of clubs and not another card?  Obviously.  I can also envision 3NT being the right spot, and further bidding giving away the show.  SO which do I play for?

I think, in retrospect, that bidding 2S is a better representation of my hand.  On the chance that I catch 3C from Pizza, I can bid a lot if I want to.  And if I do not hear 3C, I will be in a better position to make an informed decision – FURTHER – if my LHO had a decent spade suit anyway, he would have already bid 1S when it was cheap enough to do so.

So we win 3 IMPs, but we miss a slam…he had the clubs, and 3 dead diamonds.  Can you imagine his excitement when I splinter in diamonds after his presumed 3C call?  WOW.  So basically we blew 8 IMPs (slam is win 11).

And now – the story.  Well, maybe the story is best left untold…but suffice to say I am of a high enough standard that I know when my bidding is good or bad.  I also know when I have f-d up a hand and when I have not…it’s weird how that works.  Anyway, folks, do me a favor for the rest of your bridge life…when you are playing with a partner with whom you don’t intend to have a serious partnership (who knows, maybe Pizza wants one), try not to teach too much…especially on the off chance that your partner might be somewhere from centimeters to parsecs ahead of you in ability, imagination, and/or creativity.  Infer what you will…

Three times in this set, our opponents (who, by the way, basically rip into each other after every hand – GOD it is frustrating – but if they want to fight, I am not about to stop them…two reasons – a) their might be bloodshed, and that is cool at a bridge table, and b) it takes away from their ability to focus on whatever might actually be important….for instance winning the match.  So yeah, the 1NT thing – each time it is 10-12 because they are white and we are red.  Each time we collect at least 6 IMPs.

I could give you the hands and the problems that were faced, but it’s not really a matter of proving a point, or showing something clever, nearly as much as it is an indictment of playing 10-12 NTs against sound opposition.  Just write down -500 or -1100 in 3 or 4 random places on the card before the set begins and then play the other boards….

So, we compare – and in this quarter, the score was:  33-2.  We now have a 40 IMP lead as we head into the break.  Not too shabby.  There is some discussion as to who should sitout in the evening, and the team asks for my two cents….bridge wise, there is, in my mind, an obvious answer.  But this is Vegas, and both Pizza and I have our wives here – and sitting out with your wife is something that bodes well for marriages.  Eventually we decide that Spiral will sit out the 3rd Q, and Pizza will sit out the last Q….

A small note from a ‘my preference’ standpoint.  This would be my preference.  The reason is, and this might be inaccurate also, is because I believe this represents the strongest partnerships on the team.  I believe we actually have stronger partnerships than the ones we are using, but given our tendencies to this point, the obvious answer is this…Jam and I have been rocking, have a firm understanding of our methods, etc, and that trend coupled with an understanding of system would tend to indicate that he and I should be playing together in the last quarter…and so be it.

So we agree that Pizza will sit out the 4th quarter.  We have a decent meal with our friends from Chicago (GK and JX – will come up with nicknames for them some other time) and we play a cool game called ‘Ingenious.’  Even Lori likes it – trust me folks – a ‘thinking’ game of strategy that Lori really likes INDICATES it is a strong game.  Usually Lori just gets aggravated with games like that…(which seems contradictory since she likes bridge)…

So back from dinner, and a little story about bad bidding and partnerships…I had to hear about my bidding on a hand from the afternoon (the missed slam).  This kind of stuff is what is most annoying to me.  There are ways to approach partnership issues and bidding agreements…but anyway…

As I write this, I notice that my notes from this quarter suck.  Mostly because I am aggravated – and perhaps with tomorrow’s story, this will make more sense to you… There were a few hands worthy of note because they were circled on the list.  However, I cant really remember any of them…again, bad notes.  There was something funny from the evening, though – I picked up a rock – 21 of the finest and opened 2NT.  Lefty passed.  CHO?  2D.  For those of you who know the awful law here (which is changing next month), I am now barred from further bidding, and my partner can bid whatever he wants.  So he corrects 2D to 3NT (good choice) and the auction ends.  What guarantee can you make about his hand?

YOU”RE WRONG!  He does not have 5 hearts.  So, I will pose you the next obvious question – what the hell is his hand, and what was he thinking?  (no, we don’t play forcing-stayman over 1NT openers..nice try)

Despite the opponents fighting like crazy all the time, we manage to pick up a few more IMPs here and there, and at the end of the third quarter our lead is 52 IMPs.  When we inform the opponents that we intend to bench Pizza, they immediately concede the match…
Actually, that’s only half true – the latter half.  We never told them who was being benched…

So, we’re in to the round of 8 – a tough draw indeed, whoever that might be – the two teams squaring off as the 8 and 9 seed have a history of decent finishes in this event – this years 8 –seed won the event last year, and the two of them played each other in the round of 4 two years ago.  We will have our hands full no matter what the result of their match.

AMF – signing off for day 3 in vegas, Day 2 of the GNT.  Come on day 3 of the GNT – be good to us!
About this Entry
Jul. 20th, 2008 @ 02:44 am Swiss qualifying continued...
Day 2 continued – The evening portion of the Qualifying Session…
We had a great dinner with great friends – and played some blackjack.  Within 10 minutes I was up 65% - I usually quit when I get to 50%, no matter what, but I was winning so many hands in a row that I was not paying attention to my bankroll.  Funny how winning has that effect on you…If I was losing, you know I would know exactly how much money I had left.  Good enough for now.  As an aside, Just before dinner, I played exactly one hand of blackjack – and made just enough money to pay for dinner with a blackjack!  Yee haw… (editor’s note:  I lost it all back the next morning, but you wont read about that in tomorrow’s blog.)

So, match 5.  I am getting Jam’d, so to speak.  Anyway, here we go against the leaders – beat them bad enough and we’re leading the event.  Lose to them and we’re not leading the event – imagine that…

First hand out of the box, the opponents are bidding briskly.  One of them bids blackwood.  Jam cracks the 5C response, even though he is a heavy favorite to be on lead against the slam.  Here’s the problem…Jam forgot to lead his Ace against 5!  The trump suit was:  AQ4 opposite 87652 – they went 4-1 with stiff King in the pocket.  The problem was, declarer had enough pitches while I had to follow suit – sniff sniff.  So I got my two trump tricks, and that was it.  We lost 11 IMPs when our teammates got to slam.  I don’t know how the hell they managed (read: mangled) that.

One of the things that is CRITICAL to a long event like this is partnership and teammates harmony.  Even in the best of partnerships, criticism can be misconstrued.  There have been a lot of hands that I would LOVE to have questioned my partner or my teammates (e.g., “you are the best player on their team.”; “how the hell did you bid that off 4 key cards?)  Experience indicates that this is losing bridge.  I don’t have a partnership with anyone on this team – Jam and I played out of necessity for the team.  Same with Pizza n’ me.  We’re playing out of necessity too.  I would never say a word to him, good or bad, while we’re at the table.  To be honest, it is not worth it to me to say anything away from the table either.  Not for any other reason than harmony.  It is CRITICAL not to be CRITICAL.  Remember that, JaG, next time you want to be a peckerhead  ☺.

So enough about emotions.  Keep yours in check at the table and your partner will love you for it.  Next, a play problem:
You arrive in four hearts on the following cards, west declaring:
32                   654
AKJ95            1082
K10873         J4
5                     AKQJ2
East deals and passes.  West opens 1H in third chair….
West    North    East    South
----         ----         P         P
1H         1S        2S        P
3D          P         4H    (all pass)

SO, there you go.  I can tell you this.  If you are reading this blog, you are good enough to make this hand – ESPECIALLY if you are at the other table.  The auction was tremendously different there, and that had a major effect on the play.  But here is the cool thing – somehow – and I didn’t bother asking – that declarer went DOWN.  I am telling you, it’s unfathomable….oh well.  That’s not your problem.  Declaring 4H as west with the lead of the C7 is your problem.  Win 12 – you know you can!

Here is a bidding question for you – what do you rebid with silent opponents?
K2  9854  A2  AQJ64
You open 1C.  Jam bids 1H.  What is your next call?

In the final analysis, we beat this team 30-11.  They won imps on the slam hand only.

Current VPs:  76 – and more importantly, Kings of the Mountain.  If we maintain this pace, we will win the swiss.  Most importantly, we will then get to pick our first matchup tomorrow.  That would be worth it’s weight in gold.

Match 6 – I am Jam-ming…and we’re jammin’.  This is the part of the blog that gets me upset – There are 4 double digit swings in this match – but I do not have notes (other than my hand) for any of them.  Unfortunately, I cant seem to remember what was cool about those hands.  In one case, I decided to 2-over-1 with an 11 count and we got to a frigid game for win 10.  We win this match by 18.  We are in wonderful shape right now.

Current VPs:  93.   Right now, we are 14 VPs ahead of 2nd place.  We are now playing the 2nd place team in match #7.  This is gonna be my last match for the day – I want to head out with Lori for some fun to the south end of the strip.

Match 7 – District 20 – a former partner/teammate, we’ll nickname him, I don’t know, BOFTS (note:  acronym – S stands for Soap).  I draw Pizza.  Here’s your hand, what is your thought process?
J643
54
AQ105
K54
You are North, West Deals  You are vul, they are not…:
West    North    East    South
P             P          P          1C
1H        DBL     2H         3D
P           ???

While you’re busy losing 12 IMPs on that board, let me give you another psycho hand.  Assign blame again, or blame TGD.
Q103        52
J42           AK73
A852        109763
KQ4          A3
Silent opponents:
1D – 1H
1N – 3N
So, what sayest thou?  Here is a test.  On the lie of the cards, 3NT is ICE COLD.  I will give you some hints…first, spades were led.  They are NOT 4-4.  Second, diamonds are NOT 2-2.  Create some layouts consistent with the above information…and while you’re at it, give yourself 10 IMPs for your trouble.  While you’re pondering that, what requirement would need to be met if diamonds were 2-2?  There is a bit more of a constraint now…

There were 3 pushes in this match.  Each team lost 1 overtrick IMP.  Then there were the swing boards – what did you do earlier with the hand where you held AQxx of diamonds and Kxx of clubs?  I know what we did – the answer is lose 12.  On this last hand – 3NT – we made it for win 10.  But alas, those of you with a Ph.D in math have now worked out the result – we lost by 2.  So we give up 2 VPs to them – we are still 12 VPs ahead of them now – we have 102, they have 90…more importantly, I am going out with Lori for some well-mannered frivolity on the strip.  Lets go Buffalo!

Match 8 -  We picked up 13 VPs.  Final analysis:  We end up with 115 out of 160.  No one else broke 100.  Not too shabby.  We pick the team we beat in match 4 – the swingy match that I did not play – for our round of 16 match tomorrow.  We’ll see how it goes then…Way to go, Buffalo.

As an aside – Stamina is already an issue for the squad.  I know what our best lineup is when all things are equal.  Unfortunately, all things are NOT equal at 11pm.  Fatigue and probably the stress of the event, as well as the jet lag are obvious factors late in the day.  Lets hope that is different for the rest of the event – and lets hope we can rock –n- roll tomorrow.  Signing off for day #2.

Day 2 –
A fairly stress-filled morning.  Believe it or not, I have a job interview while I am here.  Long story short, Buffalo Schools were completely inflexible in allowing me a face-to-face interview.  So I think I rocked, only time will tell, obviously.

On to bridge.  There are 23 teams that showed up here.  First match, we draw a team from District 2 – Ontario.  I know many of the players by sight if not by name.

We lost this match 11-10.  The 21 imps were WASTED at both tables.  On the board we won 10 imps – the declarer had KJT987 of trumps opposite A642.  The only opposition bidding was a 3rd seat 1D opening on his right.  Our hero got in and ran the jack of hearts.  When his LHO did not cover, he flew ace as RHO showed out.  He could have cashed black winners and gotten an inferential count on the hand that his RHO is the only one that might have been short in hearts.  Oops.

On the board we lost 11 IMPs (yes, there were 5 pushes), my pard ended himself.  It happens, but was avoidable.  I think (note:  didn’t examine the hand that closely) that declarer can still do it on his own, but it will be nearly double dummy.  Sometimes the uptown play goes downtown…

One of the pushes this match was interesting.  You pick up:
AJ3
872
AKQ
AQJ6
You open 2NT.  Pard bids 3D.  you bid 3H.  Pard bids 3S – natural – so we know he is 45xx.  What is your call?

Current VPs:  9  (a 20 point scale).  I estimate this was a decent team, and picking up 9 VPs is not how we wanted to start, but it’s not tragic either.

Match 2 – in this match, we draw a team from NYC.  Figures.  I played with Pizza.  If you are not familiar with the nicknames, checkout the posts from the GNT qualifier in our district dating back to may 3rd/4th/5th.  You might be able to work out who is whom – the names are NOT randomly assigned.  We won this match 19-4.  We deserved a slightly worse fate – at least on one hand.  I picked up:

109
A103
AQJ108
543

It went three passes to Pizza who opened 2S.  What is this?  I know what I would have.  I bid 3D – presumably forcing, right?  I guess that depends on your interpretation of 2S.  Pizza raised to 4D.  I tried 4S, and it went all pass.  Now, as it turns out we are cold – only have 2 trump losers and a club loser.  I don’t know what you have talked to your favorite partner about a 2H/2S opening in fourth chair, but Pizza had a 10 count – 3 kings and a jack.  This is not what I expected – off by at least an ace.  The good news was that he had 6.    We won 11 IMPs on that hand when our teammates bid and raised clubs a bunch of time…spades were never mentioned by our counterparts – yay.

Current VPs:  25.  We are in good shape at this pace.  Need a little more.  The good news, they are going to qualify the top 16 teams and begin a straight KO beginning tomorrow.  I will be happy to make day 2.  Hoping for more!

Match 3 – In keeping with the trend (big cities), we get the district 3 squad (including westchester county, etc.  I am ordering Pizza again for this match.  There were a couple of hands worth writing about:  First, assess blame, assuming the Great Dealer is not the one to blame:  The contract is 3NT by west.
K42            Q32
K10            AQ762
1072          54
AK953       Q42
Silent opponents, west deals
1C – 1H; 1NT – 2NT; 3NT – All pass.

Pizza and I have no agreements in place other than simple NMF over the 1NT rebid.  We don’t have a ton of agreements in any place, to be honest.

A little later on, I picked up A543  J32  109873  J  Equal red.  It started with a club on my left.  Pizza throws 1D on the table.  Negative double to me.  I bid 3D.  Lefty trots out 3S.  Pizza slams 5D (whoops) onto the table.  Vicious double, all pass.  Win 5.  Pizza’s hand?

x
xx
AKQxx
AQTxx

They did not get around to leading hearts, so we made 2 overtricks.  At the other table, they only made one overtrick in the same contract.  Pretty incredible.  The last board of this set, the opps bid as follow:
2NT – 3C;  3D – 3S; 4S – all pass.

Now this is a flight-A event.  Strange that they don’t alert the 3S call as smolen – who the hell plays it the way these days?  Some things from standard are best left in the closet – this is one of them.  So anyway, there was no alert.  The auction ended, and I was on lead.  I gave sufficient time for the ‘there was a failure to alert’ thing, and that never came.  So I lead whatever…Now, I don’t want to insult them by asking this pair if they are in fact both stupid and unethical – but apparently Pizza does not feel constrained and asks – and he is informed BY THE DUMMY (the person that should have alerted) that of course 3S was smolen.  WTF.  Oh well, win 11 when spades has no play.  So we win this match 18-5

Current VPs:  40.  Out of 60 – so not too bad.  Good enough to make day 2 and that is what is important.

Match 4 – I sit out.  We picked up 19 VPs on what appeared to be crazy swing hand – it seemed like 50+ imps exchanged hands.  Luckily, we got the better end of the deal.

Current VPs:  59 out of a possible 80.  We are sitting third.  Fine with me.  O to the cheapest meal imaginable – and we’re going with DS, The hammer, Jag, and Naid.  Here’s hoping the evening kicks as much ass – and that they are willing to give me the last sitout because I want to hang with Lori and have fun…  write more later.

This represents our first day here - no bridge in this update...just Lori and I having fun together ...

Howdy gang.  Lori and I arrived in Vegas Tuesday morning – and our flight was 16 minutes early.  It was a great, uneventful flight of only 4.5 hours.  Yikes.  We passed the time playing crossword puzzles and watching episodes from House, M.D., season one.

We catch our shuttle to the Sahara and check-in.  Wow – the mighty have fallen.  The Sahara really is a hell hole – but the price was incredibly right.  And they have incredibly cheap dinner buffets  ☺.  So we drop off our stuff and decide to walk around the strip – now, Sahara is basically the end of the north end of the strip (only stratosphere is further north).  We walked down to about the area of the Mirage and we realized how freakin tired we were.  So we walked back to the Sahara enjoying our $1.00 margaritas and jumped into the pool.

Hung out there for a bit, had a great night at the Hilton’s night club called ‘Tempo.’  The ‘scenery’ was splendid.  The servers were … wow.  Anyway…whew.  Ask Jam about it, he was there, too…

So our first day comes to a close.  Looking forward to a lot of fun Wednesday – and some bridge – the GNTs start tomorrow…  here’s hoping for the best.
About this Entry
Jun. 30th, 2008 @ 10:26 am Buffalo Regional...
Well, the buffalo regional is over - a few side stories before the good stuff...

First - I directed more sessions than I played.
Second - enjoyed a lovely buffalo meal with Snake after the swiss teams - chicken finger pizza and bbq wings.
Third - there's no such thing as a slam-dunk in a committee
Fourth - my guy still needs 2.8 golds for LM.

Anyway, my story goes something like this:
Tuesday - 3 session KO teams.  I played with the DoG (the B-I-G DoG as I was told later, by him of course).  We were five handed with David Lindop from Toronto and Gloria and Les Bart from Sarasota.

Wednesday - I had to work my 'other' job and got nothing accomplished at or near a bridge table...

Thursday - 2 sessions of pairs with the Bird.  We took flight in the second session, at least.  I missed two hands in the afternoon - that was aggravating.  Life goes on.

Friday - morning pairs as a favor to the partnership person - played with a sweet LOL from rochester.  couldnt get a hand wrong no matter how hard I tried....:).

Friday afternoon, evening, saturday afternoon, evening, and sunday all day - Directed.

Stories to follow.  The DoG has asked for his own section of the blog to edit.  Perhaps he is looking for some space to defend himself from the horrific events of tuesday...i dont think I'll grant that request... :)  heheh.  on a brighter note, DoG and I are gonna have a go at the NAPs in the fall for the Houston Nationals next spring.

will write more when time allows...hope all is well with each of you.  I have a favorite hand from the tournament - got to squeeze the dummy on defense against a partscore with the Bird - it was awesome...I am also thinking about linking nicknames to real names in an upcoming post - but then I think - what's the point of nicknames?  Thoughts?

About this Entry
May. 25th, 2008 @ 08:31 am Cleveland...
I told you I would update this blog after the Cleveland regional was over...

Well, momma and I went to cleveland to see Eddie Izzard - the show was awesome...we were then going to play the 2-session pairs game saturday and drive home late to be back for Megan's hockey game early this morning...

we modified that plan to be one session of bridge so that we're home before bedtime and can get to the hockey game easily enough.  while we were eating breakfast, momma decided that perhaps there was something fun we could do in Cleveland other than playing bridge - and since we had a few hours before the bridge game began, we looked around a bit.  we found:  http://www.glsc.org

It was totally awesome!  we went to this phenomenal exhibit there about Albert Einstein.  WOW.  It was a great time...it took a couple of hours to get through Einstein, and we had about an hour before we had to leave for game time...

So we started in on the other parts of the museum - it was like the greatest science classroom in the world....we spent about THREE hours doing all of the activities available in the museum - unbelievable...it was great!

So we missed bridge entirely...and who cares...we had a blast.

talk to ya later, troops.  I dont have another bridge entry worthwhile until the Worldwide Pairs contest on friday.  I am playing with DS in that game - we've been in the top 100 in the world before...and we've been stuck in the pits of hell before - both in this event...I am hoping for the former this time around...

Ciao

About this Entry
May. 6th, 2008 @ 09:11 pm Fourth Quarter....
I will cut/paste the final paragraph of the last entry here...so if this looks familiar, it is...
Running estimate:  down 18
actual deficit:  6

I will finish the writeup as soon as possible....but considering that RIGHT now, we are down 6 IMPs with six boards to play, it's starting to get a little exciting, isnt it?  COME ON BABY - SNAKE EYES ARE CALLIN'!  Just to keep you interested, I will tell you this.  after board 7 (leaving us 5 boards to play), Team SPIRAL had a 1 IMP lead...WOO HOO!

to save you from checking, the lineup is, Jam-Me sit North-SOuth ( i am north ), and Spiral-Shooter.

board 7:
I picked up a collection of fecal matter...something like:  542 1082  Q542  732.  Jam opens a strong NT.  RHO says double and I hear an alert.  Who cares...I just hope LHO doesnt grow a brain and pass.  We have no system of runouts in place, and I am not sure I would run, anyway.  I pass.  LHO bids 2C, and I hear another alert.  Jam asks, and finds out that double is 'DONT' (single suit), and that 2C is 'asking' for the overcaller to name their suit.  Jam passes.  RHO bids 2H and it gets checked out.  Dummy is pretty nice, INCLUDING Jack-fourth of trumps.  What was partner's hand?

KQ63  K  KJ84  A654

I have a feeling I am going to have to start alerting his 1NT openers - I think this was the third one over the course of four sessions - it sounds like an implied agreement.  I cant stand this stuff because it just erodes away at a partnership.  I can not judge the value of my hand if I cannot count on having a fit when it is 'our' hand.  I get the idea of swinging, so I dont mind this one as much.  I do mind randomly acts of violence against my partner...but perhaps it is either a 'hand hog' thing (i can relate), or just an undying lust for excitement on every hand ("anyone can open 1D").  In any case, let's press on with our -170 and hope they bid a game at the other table...this one is not so clear...but it makes, and if they open only 1D, it increases the odds of getting to game as advancer will be better placed to move with his 8 count...

Running estimate:  down 13
State of the match:  WE'RE UP 1 baby!

I will have to keep you posted with ONLY my running estimate at this point...we'll see how accurate my estimates are (you can see I am already off 14 IMPs)...if I give you the state of the match after every board, there'll be no climax...so five boards to play, and believe it or not, it is our event to lose...teammates DID bid game on the above hand...and made the uptrick...win 7.

board 8:  I picked up something resembling a hand.  543  AK872  KQ52  7.  My RHO opened 1D.  I bid 1H.  LHO doubles.  Jam bids 2D, and it went pass to me.  So, what do you do?  Keep in mind, at this point, I think we still need a board with 5 boards to play.  So what would you do?  Six losers...if you care about the colors, it is board 32, and you are at favorable vulnerability.  It is a minimum, partner can bid again, you are non-vul, and you do have these three dead spades to deal with...SO...did I sway your vote yet?  Did I give away what I did yet?  I bid 2H.  Partner begrudgingly passed, and so did both opponents...I was not worried...

Dummy tabled:
A72
Q1095
763
KQ4

Thank you for the club wastage, pard.  and the good news is, I have four losers...well, assuming they get spades going eventually.  The opening lead is the 8 of diamonds.  if a diamond back holds, I am going to be pissed off because I can ditch a spade loser on the high club.  This looks bad.  A diamond comes back in tempo, and it gets ruffed.  YES!  Whew.  good judgement pays off.  they back either black suit, and I am held to 8 tricks.  I think, although I am not sure, that this will result in a win position because I think it will be hard for the other table to stay low...just a feeling....

running estimate:  down 10

board 9:  I held:  Q86  Q1097  K5  A1072.  I like to open 11 counts with 7 or fewer losers...this certainly qualifies.  So I open 1C.  Jam bids 1S.  I bid 1NT.  RHO backs in with 2D.  Do you bid 2S?  Do you pass?  Your gut said that bidding 2S was wrong or else you probably would have done that the first time.  It might be right, now.  I did not do it.  Diamonds is cold for 9 tricks.  I estimate this to be a push because most roads our way lead to -100, including 2S.

running estimate:  down 10

board 10:  I picked up:  A542  Q6  J872  KJ4.  Jam opens a strong NT.  Here we go again - which stiff is it?  This is the kind of stuff that takes a toll on me because I feel like I am guessing all the time.

I do not want to make a parallel to Jam, by any means, but I have to share a Bermuda story with you.  I picked up:  J7654  4  53  AKQ52.  CHO opened 1NT.  RHO bid 2H natural.  I just bid 4S.  LHO, a young man who has represented his country many times doubles viciously.  Now, I know my RHO never has values for her call.  I know my LHO knows this too.  So doesnt it follow that LHO has the nuts to pound 4S?  In fact, he has six spades.  In fact, the opponents have more spades than we do.  I didnt run...I stood my ground and avoided the laydown 5C.  pard's hand?  A  A  AKQT62  J8764.  I suppose the argument is, with 11 cards in two suits, it is IMPOSSIBLE to be more balanced than 1-1.  This is standard bidding in Bermuda's arsenal... Hilarious...

back to the present problem.  This is NOT a problem if you think pard is balanced with 16 HCP.  but again, confidence erosion has been great all weekend, and I have had to be on the lookout for stuff like this....I am a trusting dullard, however, and start with stayman.  after a boring auction, we arrive in 3NT, and RHO leads a club.  clubs are 5-3 with the queen offside.  Pard has to play diamonds for no losers with:  Jxxx opposite AQxxxx.  he can start by leading the jack, and hopping ace of RHO covers or does NOT twitch.  Anyway, I think he goes with the percentage, and plays a diamond to the queen...no joy.  RHO scoops up the stiff king and cashes the other clubs.

I estimate this to be a push, despite opening the sort-of balanced 14 count.  2362.  I dont have as much an issue with this.  Although, man, I come from the school of thought that 'my partner knows there is a game bonus' and will stretch to invite when it is right to do so.  I would certainly invite with this 11 count after an opening bid and any response...truth be told, I do have sympathy for this call.  I estimate it is going to be a push...

running estimate:  down 10

board 11:  Well, there is not much time left.  I think we need a board.  This assumption is based on Spiral and shooter not having anything bad, AND bidding at least one of their games...if they bid both, we're obviously ahead.  If they have a bad result, well, who knows...

SO I pick up:  AQ9  KJ94  A52  QJ2.  RHO opens 1H after Jam passed.  I bid 1NT - yeah, I know, no tricks.  This is something I would always do, so why stop now to analyze how bad it is?  It gets checked out.  cool.

The lead is the ten of hearts.  righty wins the ace and shifts to a spade.  I put in the 9, losing to the 10 and a spade comes back.  So, I am looking better now.  2 spades, 1 heart, 1 diamond, 2 clubs.  Just need another trick.  So, I duck a diamond and they back another spade clearing the suit.  I cash the DA, both following, and play a diamond.  RHO wins, and cannot cash a spade - whew...i cant be denied some entry to the dummy now - RHO is marked as 3532 with the CA.  When the dust clears, make 2.

Now, there is danger here...my LHO has 8 HCP.  I know it's sick, but I think Spiral might crank 1NT....It is hard to say what is going to happen at their table...so I dont know how to estimate this.  I can only hope it is a push...

running estimate:  down 10

ONE BOARD TO GO...and I think we need some love...not to mention, just in case, teammates might have a bad one..

board 12:  equal hot, and I am in second seat with some fun - if we need a swing, I got a good hand to do it...KJ872  K973  void QT65.
Remember earlier?  7 losers with 11 HCP?  does that mean I can open a six loser hand with 9 HCP?  My RHO passes, and I am up. HELL YES I am in.  1 Spade is placed delicately on the table...not literally, of course... LHO slams 3NT into the table, almost in disgust.  Who knows.  Pard leads the 3 of spades, and dummy tables an interesting hand.  I think that Lefty has running diamonds and a couple of cards.  I really think we have no shot of beating this considering pard could not pound it...but again, dummy is interesting:

106
865
J1098732

So, my 'long diamond' theory is shot.  I put up the King of Spade, Lefty wins the ace, with a bit of a smug air.  Placing the Ace of diamonds on the table, he is NOT relieved when I show out.  He now cashes the DK...so what in the hell are you pitching on these two cards?  I pitch an encouraging heart (the three - odd/even), and an encouraging spade.  Declarer plays CA, CK, and a club.  Pard shows out on the third club.  So, declarer has six clubs...interesting.  Not sure what to do, but pard plays the S4...this is good...pard isnt really interested in spades.  is not interested in hearts - that is a good thing.....so I play the SJ to deny the dummy entry in case it is needed.  Declarer plays the queen, and Jam tanks for a bit, and plays the 9.  Now declarer pseudo-punts and plays a diamond.  Jam wins the DQ, and plays a spade to me.  I can win, cash a spade, and cash a club for down 1.  Damn.  I pitched a spade.  if I dont pitch a spade, we can get another trick.  This is a bummer...So there is a chance we can lose imps.  Of course, 5D is rock-solid cold...so I am not necessarily worried..we might be able to pick up a lot of imps just because of the contract...but wait a second....remember I needed 10 IMPs?  That was half the motivation for opening my piece of schlitz in the first place.  Declarer held 2236 with 27 HCP.  The bidding has the potential to be ugly, and to be honest, 6D is a good contract....but it is hard to get to...so I dont know what to gauge this....

On even further review, it's not clear what Jam would lead, but he claims it would have been a heart from JTxx had I not bid 1S.  this is encouraging...it means that no matter what the contract is, we might just have our swing...but I want to feel conservative so as not to get too excited....I estimate that we picked it up - I believe we did it.  BUT - in order to keep a level head, I agree with Jam that we probably need a hand from our teammates for the assistance...

DID WE GET IT?  On to the news...

actual board results:

board 8 - 2H making just 2 because of the diamond ruff.  Opps bid a game and went down 2.  win 5.

Current state of the match:  up 6

board 9 - I dont know the auction, but the result was a push.

Current state of the match:  up 6

board 10 - This is unfortunate....it should have been something resembling a push.  It was a lose 6 when they played a diamond partial.  I cant believe these guys played a M***********G partial on this hand..

Current state of the match:  tied.

board 11 - WTG teammates - scare them out of a claimer.  win 6.  As expected, Spiral pounded the 1NT overcall.  As not expected, the dummy's hand ran.  They ended up in 3D somehow - apparently there was a bidding misunderstanding...

Current state of the match:  up 6.

board 12 - There was one thing I did not count on....considering the combined hands, and considering the potential for a bidding misunderstanding, getting to 7D was in play.  This would be like Casey at the Bat - bases loaded, full count, pitchers hauls out something nasty....and.......

they got to 3NT.  However...there was NO 1 Spade bid on my 9 count...Opening lead?  NOT a spade.  win 12.

hey baby, let's go to vegas....

SO what is the result of this last quarter?  30-6.  This 12 board set was a blowout, 57-6.  We won the event by 18 IMPs.  This is the second time in three years that I am going to a national GNT-A with Spiral (and with Pizza).  I am bent out of shape that I am not able to play bridge even more often than I do now.  such is life...

Jam and I will have worked out the bugs in our methods, and we'll be ready...

SEE YOU IN JULY!
About this Entry
May. 5th, 2008 @ 10:55 pm D5 Q - Finals...
Enter the final set...but just before hand, the five of us go to 'Steak and Shake' for lunch.  First time for me...and SnS virgin if you will, surrounded by them (the other 3 buffalonians - Jam, Shooter, and Spiral - are virgins here too).

I got the frisco melt with these teeny-tiny ass fries...I thought it was kind of funny...it looked like a plate full of toothpicks...

To this point, in 3 sessions of bridge, only one person had not sat out - Spiral.  So I offer to play with Pizza for the first six, or perhaps 12, boards of the set.  I think this is a horrible idea in retrospect...but if we can get Spiral some rest, it might make the difference between winning and losing the event...and besides, how bad can a six board set be for two decent guys with NO agreements?

hilarious.  So off we go.  I think the set is fairly mundane, including a pass-out.  It turns out it was not mundane.  We lost 25 IMPs.  WOW. Don't ask.  So, even though we started the set down only 6 imps (half-carryover from saturday), we're now stuck 33.  Apparently there was one cute board from the second quarter when I was sitting out.  Spiral held:
AQ8
------
AJ53
KJ8763

Pizza opened 2C - RHO bid 2S.  Spiral doubled.  ALERT!  they ask, and it is explained as a bust.  WHOA.  Oh well.  Should be able to show this fourteen count no problem after that, right?  So partner rebids 2NT, and it goes pass to you.  Now seriously, how would you bid this, BEFORE the alert?

Spiral blasted out 7C over 2NT - and while I am sure this was surprising, it ended the auction quickly.  18 top tricks in 3 different 7 level contracts was enough...lose two for bidding the wrong grannie...no big deal...

So, we're down 33 with 12 to play.  Can it be done?  Of course it has been done before...we'll need our absolute best lineup playing their absolute best bridge.  personally, I firmly believe our best lineup involves 3 distinct people on the team (and since I know the whole team is reading this, I will leave even the NICKNAMES out of this discussion).  In my opinion, the best results have come with Jam and me playing, so I think that is definitely best for the final 12.  Off we go...

I will give you as much as I can, in order...You are NORTH on every hand.

board 1:  You hold:
J10542
Q52
J3
432

Jam opens 1C in third chair.  RHO bids 1H.  I chose to pass.  This seems like the right thing to do considering we''re down 33 imps.  Jam will balance if necessary, and if not, I can balance if necessary.  No point in getting excited, and besides, little things like this sometime pay big dividends if it works right...so surprisingly, the auction is quickly passed out....I lead a club, and declarer takes 10 tricks.  We can hold him to +140 with a slight modification of our defense, but not a big deal.  RHO is 15 balanced.  LHO is:  Axx  xx  KQ10xx  xxx.  A pretty good hand, something you should certainly bid with if pard overcalls.  Lucky for us, our opponent didnt.  Shooter, holding the strong NT, overcalled 1NT, and now Spiral drove to game....cold on the lie of the cards...WIN 10

running estimate:  down 28 (give them credit for half of the 10 IMPs...they'll it probably half the time)
deficit:  23 IMPs

board 2:
5
Q4
AJ10872
K1094

strong club on your left, 1S on your right, 4S on your left.  you're up.  So I am strongly considering blasting the HQ through the dummy, might be right.  Might be horribly wrong.  besides, do I expect the king in the dummy, and pard to have the Ace-Jack?  give me a break.  Further, if it is wrong, it's awful.  and there's nothing to say declarer or dummy isn't short in hearts either.  So, I lead the club four. Dummy hits:

AKxx
Kxx
xx
AQxx

Damn - HK.  Well, perhaps pard doesnt have HJ.  So declarer puts in the CQ, and it holds the trick (obviously).  Declarer cashes SA, and plays a spade to his queen holding.  Now, declarer plays a club to the ace, and tracks a diamond.  I win the trick, declarer playing the King, and play a high diamond, partnering flagging a doubleton.  Declarer ruffs a diamond high, ruffs a club, and leads a heart.  moment of truth.  Do you put up the queen to 'unblock' yourself?

We nipped it one.  this is sure to be a push with 16 opposite a decent eight.  But, we're in zone 1 as a team.  at the other table, the 'dummy' opened a strong NT. soon-to-be-declarer transferred, and the person holding my cards bid 3D.  This forced the 'transferrer' (shooter) to re-evaluate his KQx of diamonds to be worthless.  Thus, when his partner accepted the transfer at the three level, he PASSED.  Just in.  WIN 6.  Meanwhile, I cannot predict that this happened.  So, I think this is closer to a push than anything else....

Running Estimate:  down 28
Actual Deficit:  17

board 3:  I held a ROCK:
1032
1042
987542

Damn major suit tens ruining my perfect hand...pard bids spades and hearts.  opponents bid clubs and clubs.  Jam doesnt want to let this hand go, and thinks about bidding again, but eventually comes to pass...The defense was straightforward, as long as Jam doesnt try to cash out, we're gonna nip this a trick.  We do.  The bidding and the defense seem ordinary.  I chalk this up to a push.  Stupid me....this is board #9 of #12 at the other table, and they are feeling it at this point...the person holding Jam's cards loses his nerve and tries to cash out....this allows 3C to make.  WIN 4

Running estimate:  down 28
Actual deficit:  13

board 4:  I pick up:
52
KJ52
AJ
J8742

LHO opens 1S in third chair, and it goes pass pass to me.  Now, they are playing precision.  So I think pard is probably in the area of 12-13 HCP with spade length, and just cant find a call.  RHO may have a good 8 count and pass...although most players wouldn't do that even with their system being what it is....I would rather have my minors reversed so I can outbid Jam should he bid my doubleton, but life is NOT perfect.  I double.  It's incredible to me how often it goes 4S by the opener, and now you're stuck, and you feel like a HUGE a$$hole for balancing.  Remember people, ZONE 1.  LHO bids 2C.  CHO bids 2H.  that ends the auction.  Try though they might, they cannot beat Jam who has exactly 8 tricks...and a 13 count!  I estimate this could be trouble for the opponents.  This might be a good pickup for us.  I will credit us with 5 IMPs for this board...but it could easily be more.  The opponents can make 2S, and I believe that Spiral and Shooter will be there...In reality, they ended up in 3S going down 1, but we picked up 2 imps because they were non-vul.  I know it says 'board 4' up there...it should simply be the fourth board of the the match...the vulnerability varies here, folks, sorry.

Running estimate:  down 23
actual deficit:  11

board 5:  I pick up:
542
6532
QJ109
92

Great huh?  Jam opens 2C.  Uh-oh.  What are our methods again?  UGH.  when in doubt, just bid...so I throw 2D on the table.  Jam bids 2S.  Whew.  We didnt talk about follow ups here...but it should be clear to Jam that fast arrival applies here...so I blast out 4S and it goes all pass in tempo.  We then joke that we don't know what the other person has.  when the smoke clears, the opponents defend correctly and Jam takes only 11 tricks.  Might be lose an imp...but it's negligible either way...PUSH

Running estimate:  down 23
actual deficit:  11

board 6:  I pick up a moderate collection:
62
Q43
AK
A109732

In third chair, my RHO opens 1H.  I like to have more to overcall...but we're in need.  So I bid 2C.  LHO bids 2S (forgot to preempt?).  CHO bids 3D (perhaps pass was cuebidding the non-preempt...WTF is going on?).  RHO thinks and bids 3S...and I am licking my lips at the prospects of doubling 4S.  I pass.  LHO bids 4S, and I cant wait to pound it....but I am still waiting...WHY?  Fooled ya, pard didnt bid 5m - he cracked it before I could.  We collected 300.  Teammates went quietly at the other table when Jam's hand opened 3D in second chair on a total rag (Jack-seventh and the ace of spades).  I estimate we win about 5 IMPs on this board as teammates are likely in the -100 range.  WIN 5.

More to follow...

About this Entry
May. 5th, 2008 @ 10:34 pm Semi, second half...
So I sit out the first six boards of the second half, and play on playing the fourth quarter.  After six boards, I am told we're in an okay position.  I dont know any of the hands, and obviously don't know the outcome IMPs-wise, but I can tell you this...we picked up 15 IMPs on those six boards, so we're sitting ahead about 27 IMPs with our six boards yet to come...would it be enough?

First board out, Jam opened a strong NT.
I held:
KJT8
65
A
J87632

So, what do you do?  I am happy, very happy, in retrospect with my call.  Do I really care if pard has fillers in clubs?  Apparently have Tx of clubs and all outside cards isnt enough?  who knows...so I start with 2C.  LHO bids 2D, and partner lowers the boom.  Do you sit?

I could give you another hand that we won imps on that match, but what is the point?  It was a straightforward-to-bid game that the opps didnt bid.  Life goes on.

I sat out the double of 2D above and collected 800...its not clear to me we're making 3NT while I am bidding the hand, is it?  I know we're going plus in this contract considering I dont have to have ANY HCP for this action...much less a misfit and the ace of trumps...

The result?  Lose 11.  Ugh...check out Jam's hand (at least there was no stiff this time!)

So you're off two key cards...the king of trump is stiff in the pocket, which happens to be the location of the HA also.  11 imps down the drain.  And here I thought we might win a couple for the 800...NOPE...

Then, I had to declare 3D after some aggressive bidding...

The opening lead is, mercifully, the DJ.  You thought I was gonna say a heart, right?  How do play it.  By the way, IF you make, you lose 3 imps.  heh...dont make it?  lose 7.  RHO wins the DA as I played the 5 (might need the entry), and RHO backs a spade.  I duck, LHO wins and plays another diamond.  I win the Queen in the dummy, both following...now what?

so we lose this set of six 19-21.  That's still plenty to hold on to victory.  Off we go to the finals, to take on the team that is 12 IMPs ahead of us...Personally, I have a long history playing against two of the four players on this team.  I have been crushing them to a fine powder for nearly a decade...but to that end, I have had my share of solid CHOs to help me...not the least of which is my wife...

If I may digress a little...a few years ago was my last hurrah in flight B (under 2000 masterpoints).  I asked my wife to please play with me in the final event of my career - because I wanted to have fun, and hell, if we happened to win the NAP qualifier in the district, we got paid to go to Dallas to play for a national championship!  She accepted...Long story short, if was a four session qualifer...and our session scores were:
In order:
1st - 43%
2nd - see below
3rd - 44%
4th - 53%

In the second session, Notre Dame was playing USC in college football that day (the infamous USC-cheating day where the QB pushed the RB into the endzone...).  I told Lori I was gonna go watch the game at a local pub, while she took a nap cuz she was not feeling well.  So, I come back five minutes before game time, knock on our door, and she is in her pajamas and bleary eyed.  This is not good for our side.  So I told her to enjoy her salad, get dressed, and head down to the playing site at her leisure - of course I offered to withdraw if she so chose because she was clearly not feeling well...she disagreed w/ the idea of withdrawal...

SO she gets to the site about 5 minutes after the boards are duped, and off we go.  So we get to this pairs table (the pair I have been crushing for a decade), and they are talking about the rest of the field.  Mind you, Lori and I had a 43% in the first session, and these guys are not even considering Lori and I as opponents...they referring to everyone else, and comparing themselves to them, blah blah blah.  Meanwhile, we fail to balance on a hand and it appears to be a total zero...and it was.  our only one...

So in the back of my mind, I am hoping..NAY...begging for us to pummel these clowns for the session...and we did.  We beat them by 7.5 boards.  Bastards...truth be told, we beat everyone by 4.5 boards...we had an 80% game.  I promised Lori I would take over, and I did just that.  She played 1 hand.

so we went to dallas and got rocked...but so what...we went to dallas (free!)

see the next post for the finals discussion....
About this Entry
May. 4th, 2008 @ 02:48 pm D5 Q - Semi-final
So we're in!  I am with Jam.  To start at the other table is Pizza-Spiral.  They are playing the buffalo pair of hert bargesheimer, and kristy chellog.  We are playing two guys whom I have seen before, but I do not really know them, one of whom has an unusual name.  THey are nice guys...

onward!

First board out, you're on lead:
K7632

J972

the auction is brief.  1H-2H-4H by the opponents.  What shall be thy first thrust?

A couple of boards later, I picked up:

They opened a weak 2D in third chair on my right, all hot.  Do you have enough to act?

Then, you picked up:

equal white...Jam opens 1H as dealer.  I bid 4H, left doubles, and Jam trots out 4S...WTF?  we had this brief discussion yesterday about playing kickback all the time, but I dont think we agreed to it...but could it be?  Anyway, I dont believe that it is...but I do believe I have to cuebid.  So I threw 5C on the table which got cracked.  Jam bid 5H which got cracked ...+650

SO what the hell is going on?  heh.  Apparently we didnt feel like opening 1D and rebidding spades with 4351 shape and a 16 count.  heh.  Anyway, hte opponents lead a friggin heart, the killing lead, and still dont beat it.  win 6.

In the final analysis, I believe we left NOTHING on the table...we controlled all that was controllable, and it was all in our favor.  Pizza and Spiral have LOOOOOOOOOONG faces.  Jam is a bit excited about our set, and I think it might slightly harm team chemistry....he has a strange way of showing it most of the time....a bit rough...business like is probably a better description...

well, at halftime, we are ahead in this match by the total of:  35-17.  Remember, though, we are giving up 5.5 IMPs...so we're actually ahead by 12.5 at this point...not insurmountable.

Will tell you about the second half, and some excitement as soon as possible...
